Indonesia’s pesticide market dominated by foreign firms

Indonesia’s pesticide market has been dominated by products of multinational companies, which control about 60 percent of the market, according to Chairman of the National Pesticide Society (HMPN), Rusmanto.

He said that local producer only account for about 40 percent of the Rp 5.6 trillion per year market.

But he said that going forward, the association intends to reverse the situation so that in the future local products could grab about 60 percent of the market.  He is confident that it could be achieved considering the fact that local products in general are 25 percent cheaper, and the quality is relatively the same with that of the multinational companies’ products.

He said that to help realize the target, the government’s support is crucial as since the deregulation measure introduced in 2000, plenty of pesticide brands have crowded the market. (rei)
