The plantation sector contributed about US$20.93 billion in net export revenue to the country’s 2011 trade balance, up slightly from $20 billion in the previous year, Minister of Agriculture Suswono said on Monday.

Palm oil accounted for $15.5 billion, rubber $7.8 billion, and coffee $1.7 billion, the minister said at a press conference.

“This makes the plantation sub-sector as the largest contributor to foreign exchange revenue from the agriculture sector,” Suswono said.

Elsewhere, the minister said that state revenue from tobacco excise totaled Rp 63 trillion, while revenue from export tax of palm oil Rp 20 trillion, and export tax of cocoa beans Rp 615 billion.

Suswono said that the prospect of the plantation sector in 2012 remains bright.  Overall, the country’s agriculture sector enjoyed a trade surplus of $17.02 billion, up by 44.20 percent.  The food-crop sub-sector suffered a trade deficit, he said. (firman)
