The Ministry of Agriculture has urged state-owned trading company PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PPI) to realize the planned import of 240,000 tons of raw sugar in May.

Director General of Plantations at the Ministry of Agriculture, Gamal Nasir, feared that national sugar stock would not be sufficient to meet demand in May if import is late.

Gamal explained that the planned raw sugar import was supposed to be made in late March so that it could be processed into white crystal sugar in April just in time to be distributed to household consumers in the eastern part of Indonesia in early May.

The government has decided to make the raw sugar import as sugar supply at home particularly in the eastern part of Indonesia is limited. (rei)
