The government will appoint an independent auditor to help in supervising the planned import of 240,000 tons of raw sugar, Director General of Domestic Trade Affairs at the Ministry of Trade, Gunaryo said.

The auditor will assist the special team of the Indonesian Sugar Council to make sure that the sugar products resulting from the imported raw sugar would not be distributed in Java and Sumatra, Gunaryo said.

He said that the imported sugar is dedicated only to meet demand in the eastern part of Indonesia, which is expected to suffer supply deficit this year, while Java and Sumatra are expected to enjoy production surplus.

The imported raw sugar is expected to arrive by the end of April.  State-owned trading firm PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PPI) has been appointed to carry out the import.  The company will also have the rights to appoint which sugar companies to process the imported raw sugar into white crystal sugar products.
