PPI to import raw sugar from Australia, Thailand

State-owned PT Perusahaan Perdagangan Indonesia (PPI), which has been appointed by the government to import 240,000 tons of raw sugar, plans to import the sweetener from Australia and Thailand.

Heinrich Napitupulu, President Director of PPI, was quoted on Tuesday by Kontan as saying that in terms of distance the two countries were closer to Indonesia.  The firm initially also considered Brazil as a source of import.

PPI will import the raw sugar to be processed into white crystal sugar for household consumers in the eastern part of Indonesia to help securing supply until May as local output lags demand.

The company has yet to decide which companies to process the raw sugar into crystal sugar products. (rei)
