Seven firms apply for raw sugar import

Seven companies including state-owned plantation firms PTPN IX, PTPN X, and PTPN XI have applied to become importers of raw sugar, Director General of Plantation Gamal Nasir was quoted by Kontan on Wednesday as saying.

The government has decided to import about 240,000 tons of raw sugar this year to help meet domestic demand.  The government has said that the import rights will only be given to companies which have sugar mills with idle capacity.

Gamal said that there is sill possibility for the number of companies applying for importer status to increase. (rei)
