The Indonesian Sugarcane Farmers Association urged the government to tighten the procedure for the planned import of 240,000 tons of raw sugar.

M. Nur Khabsyin, Deputy Secretary General of the association, said that tightening of the import procedure, such as by putting a label on the packages that the raw sugar is destined only for the eastern part of Indonesia, is to help avoid the sugar being leaked to the western part of Indonesia, where production is more than sufficient.

The government has decided to import 240,000 tons of raw sugar to ensure white crystal sugar for consumers in the eastern part of Indonesia due to production shortage in the eastern part of Indonesia one month before the start of the harvest in May. (rei)
