The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) sees a slower rice production growth in the country this year.

BPS said on Monday that rice output this year is estimated grow by only 1.53 percent compared to 3.39 percent growth projected by the government.  Last year, unhusked rice production reached 65.39 million tons.

Director General of Food Crops at the Ministry of Agriculture Udoro Kasih Anggoro said there was still ample time to jack up rice production to meet the government’s target this year by focusing on productivity improvement.

He said that the key is to ensure provincial/regency government leaders to take a leading role in making sure that productivity can be further increased by providing sufficient seeds, fertilizer, proper irrigation and credit facility.  “The key is to provide favorable environment for farmers,” he said.
