RI kretek cigarette producers win case against US at WTO

Indonesian kretek cigarette producers have finally won the case against the US at the WTO.

The WTO has ruled that the US government policy which bans the distribution of kretek cigarette products in the US as discriminative and inconsistent with Technical Barriers Trade agreement.

The US government used the Family Smoking Prevention Tobacco Control Act to ban the production and distribution of cigarette products with aroma including kretek.  But menthol cigarette products are still allowed.

The Indonesian government on April 7, 2010 filed a protest on the US policy with the WTO.  Vice Minister of Trade Bayu Krisnamurthi said that this trade diplomatic victory  would provide confidence for the government’s other trade diplomatic missions.

Industry players welcome the victory, saying that if the US ruling is maintained, they fear that it would be copied in other countries. (rei)
