Farmers from several corn-producing areas in Lampung staged a demonstration in front of the Provincial Legislative Council building on Thursday to protest the government’s corn import policy.

The farmers claimed that the import, made at a time when corn harvest at home has just started, has caused corn price at the farm level to plunge during the past four months to Rp 1,200-Rp 1,300 per kg from Rp 2,500 previously.

The farmers have also complained about the difficulties in obtaining subsidized fertilizer and seeds, causing production cost to surge. (rei)
