The US government has questioned the plan by the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture tighten the import of horticulture and vegetable products among others by limiting the entry points to only four from eight.

If the plan is realized, import of horticulture products would no longer be allowed to be shipped in via the country’s main Tanjung Priok Port.

Minister of Agriculure Suswono acknowledged on Monday that the US government has questioned the policy, but Indonesia will press ahead with this plan, and would explain to the US that it was necessary to protect local farmers as well as consumers particularly against products hazardous to health.

The Ministry has issued three rulings to tighten the import of horticulture products, which would be effective in March.(Firman/rei))
